To detour to the Apple Dam campsite 1 km from the junction take the next left, down Kauri Sanctuary Rd for 500 m. A grassy 4WD track runs downhill on the left to a modest but pretty campsite with water tank/stream/dam and a long-drop toilet. Please call ahead to book.
