Madera Canyon Nature Trail is a great trail for getting out of the desert heat and enjoying a peaceful babbling brook along with fantastic views of the Santa Rita Mountains. The trail was very well maintained and in good condition aside from a very small amount of litter. Madera hiking trails are applauded throughout the Southwest, and vary from paved, handicap-accessible trails and gentle walking paths in the lower canyon, to steep, expert trails leading to the top of 9,453-foot Mt. No luck for us, but we did see many other birds and really enjoyed the beautiful easy hike. Make your way about 200 to 300 yards down the trail. Most people that pass through the Davis Mountains don’t even know this little gem exists, since it sits at one of the many roadside parks and there isn’t a sign on the road identifying it. There are a lot of birds and butterflies. Note that there is a $5 parking fee here but the stations were closed when we visited and we also have an annual National Park Pass so we just put that on our dashboard. This trail actually stretches from Proctor Trailhead, a short distance down-canyon from Whitehouse Picnic Area, to Mt Wrightson Picnic Area at the end of the Madera Canyon Road.
